Digital Media – Sports Media
for the love of the game
Preparing students for careers creating content for and about the ever-changing sports and entertainment industries, TU’s digital media program with a professional track in sports media trains students to work in broadcasting, journalism, social media, public relations, fan engagement or related areas. Students explore sports information reporting and analysis, develop skills on camera, behind the scenes and at the mic, learn about sports data analytics and prepare for professional internships by leading a sports media production team.
Program Highlights
With a foundation based in digital media, the digital media program with a sports media track prepares students to serve in a variety of roles in the sports industry, including sports reporting, broadcasting, online media, advertising, video production, public relations, communications, digital media and management. Students learn to work with sports data and statistics, and get a variety of hands-on experience producing video, radio and podcasting content.
Preparing You for the Real World
TU’s sports media track gives students practical skills in sports writing and broadcasting, play-by-play and interviewing, hosting and anchoring and multimedia content creation. These experiences prepare students for work in sport and entertainment areas and also help them develop skills that support a variety of communication fields.
Active, Experiential Learning
In conjunction with the TU Sports Media Team, students get real-world experience participating in media support and content creation for Tiffin University’s NCAA Division II athletic program, working with the Dragons’ 25 intercollegiate athletic teams.
Courses & Format
SAMPLE COURSES
DMD261 – Sports Writing: This course introduces students to the field of sports writing by studying the fundamentals of gathering, organizing, evaluating and writing sports information in accepted professional style across news media and media relations platforms. Students will attend and document athletic events, conduct research, and report on them through written content for traditional and new media
DMD362 – Sports Broadcasting: This course introduces students to the field of sports reporting through the use of live and recorded audio and video media. Students will develop skills in writing for TV and radio, on-camera delivery, play-by-play and color commentary, interviewing, sideline reporting, sports debating, hosting and anchoring. Students will create original sports media content including live broadcasts, pregame and postgame shows and roundtables.
DMD363 – Sports Research & Statistics: This course presents an introduction to and survey of practices of collecting, processing, visualizing, and analyzing data in sports. Students will explore technologies used in data collection and processing, along with methods for measuring and comparing individual and team performance.
DMD462 – Sports Media Production: This course offers students practical experience in basic television and radio/podcast production, working live, recorded and live-to-tape, both in-studio and remote. Students acquire creative and technical skills and learn how to work as a production team and become prepared for internships and careers in sports media.
